A Youthful Revolution: Leading the Plastic Waste Fight in Hanoi
THE HANOI CHRONICLE — The Hanoi Youth Union has initiated the second National Green Sunday campaign in the Hoai Duc District, a prelude to World Environment Day on June 5th. This campaign stands out with the formation of three core volunteer teams advocating for youth-led environmental initiatives and community development.
These teams, comprised of passionate individuals, will spearhead the 2025 summer volunteer campaign, emphasizing the crucial role of youth in fostering clean and civilized neighborhoods.
The “Green Spirit – Clean from Lanes to Boulevards” team, a collaboration of local youth, Women’s Union members, and Veterans Association representatives, along with the “3+ Self-Governance Team,” will lead cleanup drives during Volunteer Saturdays and Green Sundays. Their efforts will focus on residential areas, markets, and youth-designated routes to improve grassroots-level environmental sanitation.

By engaging communities at the local level, they inspire green living and collective action for a sustainable future.
The “Green Summer Volunteers” team, including enthusiastic youth union members and students, takes the lead in developing new-style rural areas. Their initiatives include environmental cleanups, waste collection, tree-planting drives, public education, and summer activities for children, among other impactful community projects.

Nguyen Duc Tien, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Youth Union, encouraged local chapters and young members to actively engage in cleaning up pollution hotspots, such as ponds, lakes, and wetlands. He emphasized the significance of initiating meaningful, youth-led projects that address the needs of local communities.
During the event, the organizers distributed 50 sorting bins, reusable market baskets, and biodegradable trash bags to residential groups, neighborhoods, and Women’s Union representatives, promoting waste segregation and sustainable consumption practices.
Over 250 young volunteers enthusiastically participated in sanitation work along the dike, at the war martyrs’ cemetery, and the Duong Lieu Commune Football Field. They removed illegal advertisements from walls in Moi and Me Tao villages and educated the public about reducing plastic waste and proper trash sorting in local markets and residential areas.
In addition to the environmental drive, the Hanoi Youth Union and the Hanoi Youth Federation collaborated with the Vietnam Young Physicians Association and the FPT Long Chau pharmacy and vaccination center to offer free health checkups and medication to 500 Hoai Duc District residents through the “Young Doctors Pioneer in the Digital Era” program.
