Vietnam’s Weather Alert: Torrential Downpours Sweep Southern Provinces and Central Highlands

On the evening of May 19, the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting reported moderate to heavy rainfall in the Northeast region, with an average of 30-60mm.

Meanwhile, the Northwest region, along with Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, experienced more intense weather with moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The rainfall in these areas ranged from 40-80mm, with some locations surpassing 150mm.

The Central region, Central Highlands, and the South are also bracing for prolonged thunderstorms, mostly occurring in the afternoon and evening.

Regional Weather Forecast

Northwest Region: The evening and night skies are expected to be overcast, with moderate to heavy rain in certain areas. Thunderstorms may bring tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds. Temperature lows will be between 23-26°C, while highs will reach 31-34°C.

Northeast Region: Cloudy and rainy conditions are predicted throughout the day, with scattered thunderstorms in the evening. Southeast winds will be gentle, blowing at level 2-3. Similar to the Northwest, there is a risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from a low of 23-26°C to a high of 29-32°C.

Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue: This region will experience cloudy and rainy weather during the day, with thunderstorms developing in some areas during the evening and night. As with other regions, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms. Temperature-wise, the lows will be between 25-28°C, and the highs will reach 30-33°C.

Da Nang to Binh Thuan: During the day, the region will enjoy a mix of clouds and sunshine, with intense heat. However, in the evening and night, thunderstorms will roll in for some areas. The usual risks of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds accompany these storms. The temperature will dip to a low of 25-28°C and climb to a high of 32-35°C.

Central Highlands: The Central Highlands will see a mix of clouds and sunshine during the day, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night. Once again, the potential for tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds exists during thunderstorms. The temperature range is expected to be 21-24°C at its lowest and 27-30°C at its highest.

Southern Region: The Southern region will experience cloudy and rainy weather during the day, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night. The risks associated with thunderstorms, including tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds, remain present. Temperatures will bottom out at 25-28°C and peak at 31-34°C.

Weather Forecast for Major Cities

Hanoi: The capital city will experience a cloudy and rainy day, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night. As with the rest of the country, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms. The temperature will range from a low of 24-26°C to a high of 30-32°C.

Ho Chi Minh City: The city will see a mix of clouds and sunshine during the day, with thunderstorms developing in some areas at night. The usual risks of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds are present during thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from a low of 25-28°C to a high of 31-34°C, with some places exceeding 34°C.
